• Albums of the Year- 2025

Music is amazing. Music is powerful, beautiful, myriad, a marvel, my favourite thing, and, genuinely, life-saving. And there’s so much of it, so much music to fall in love with, […]

  • MILDRED- ‘Mildred’

While a lot of new records arrive on cue, fresh and clean, at the end of an extensive promotional campaign to an expectant and prepared public, others seem to appear […]

  • EMPTY COUNTRY- ‘Empty Country’

Joseph D’Agostino has been through hell. And of course that doesn’t just mean the injustice of his former band, the terrific but terribly-named Cymbals Eat Guitars, never getting the credit […]

BON IVER- ‘i,i’

Three years since it first emerged to passionate praise and perplexed head-scratching and seemingly nothing in between, Bon Iver’s last album, the enigmatic ’22, a Million’, still rewards repeat listens. From its abstract artwork and song titles, ‘i,i’ initially promises more of the same. There’s even a grand concept in play- this is apparently the final ‘season’ of Bon Iver, […]

Listen to OUT OF BODY

The 1990s are well and truly back. And while this is terrible news for, well, pretty much everything, a thin sliver of hope can be found in modern bands taking inspiration from that decade’s now-classic post-hardcore sounds. Austin, Texas outfit Out of Body aren’t the only ones doing so but they stand out- especially on new EP, ‘Son Sun’- by […]

JEROMES DREAM- ‘LP’

Time is a funny thing. Over 20 years ago Jeromes Dream were another fiery screamo outfit with wild ideas and a weird sense of humor. Depending on who you asked, their biggest achievement was either recording a split with Orchid or pissing everybody off with a change in sound on their second and final record. In the years following their […]

It’s just been announced that Holy Roar will be releasing the Australian outfit’s next album ‘Triumph & Disaster’ in the UK. The rest of the world will be covered by Translation […]

#MODERATEROCKRECOMMENDS- June 2019

Summer is here. The season of sun, fun and frolics! Well, not around here apparently. This month’s playlist is marked by heartache, violence, relentless hardcore punk, and death. Not something to dive into during your neighbour’s barbecue then. Still, I hope you find something to love. CAVE IN- Final Transmission BAD BREEDING- Exiled RUSSIAN CIRCLES- Milano PELICAN- Midnight and Mescaline […]

JUNRO- ‘From Hell’

There’s a distinctly unfashionable whiff to Junro’s debut album. The New England outfit’s chunky, melodic rock is reminiscent of early Incubus, latter-day Taproot, and even Alien Ant Farm. Despite that, or perhaps even because of it, ‘From Hell’ is an engaging and addictive listen. The title track is a bouncy, surprisingly technical slice of punk, ‘Invincible’ feels like the best […]

#MODERATEROCKRECOMMENDS- May 2019

From time to time I wrestle with giving ModerateRock sharper focus. Should we pivot to post-hardcore or go all-in on modern ambient? But then I hear something new, something I fall so quick and hard in love with, that wouldn’t fall within whatever lines might have to be drawn, and I say focus be damned. If you long for ever […]

Listen to THROES

Throes aren’t fucking around. The Idaho outfit are relentlessly intense, describe their music (or maybe themselves) only as “ugly”, and their debut album due out in July via Holy Roar, will be titled ‘In the Hands of an Angry God’. This is bleak, barreling sludge made to soundtrack the planet’s sick, slow death. So highly recommended of course!
