Tall Talker might not need an introduction. The Leeds-based instrumental trio formed in late 2014, have played shows with And So I Watch You From Afar, Delta Sleep, TTNG and more, and released their debut EP in 2018. They’ve been around.

If an excuse were needed to further recommend the work of drummer Sam Newham, bassist Josh Barnett, and guitarist Zach North though, the release of a new single, ‘River Hands’, is more than enough.

Nodding to the band’s equal love of rock, hip-hop, and jazz, the song bounces around a bunch but still feels coherent and complete. The slightly fuzzy section midway through is my highlight.

Side note: The song is also part of a fundraising compilation for Leeds-area artists called ‘Come Stay With Me’. It’s been organised by the passionate people at Come Play With Me in an effort to aid bands struggling in the wake of COVID-19. All profits from the sale of the vinyl version of the collection will go back to the artists that contributed tracks.

Tall Talker are terrific then. Mathy, progressive grooves for fans of Alpha Male Tea Party, Animals As Leaders, and Saturday afternoons at ArcTanGent
